The Cultural Catwalk steering group have now had their first few meetings and we are getting closer to shaping the event and what we will create for it.
We started by going over the aim of the Cultural Catwalk, which is to create clothing/costumes that show how contemporary fashion has been influenced by different cultures. The idea is that we will work with a textile artist to create pieces as well as working with a range of community groups and students at Nottingham Trent university, these will all be shown at an end event at Nottingham Castle on Saturday the 8th September.
We started looking at images of the items in our exhibition "Unravelled" and "Living in Silk" and made mood boards showing the items, details and colours that we liked. We thought about how we could use these as a starting point for creating something wearable.
We thought about painting large pieces of silk or fabric to wear, similar to the green silk wrap in Living In Silk. We also thought about making fans and playing with makeup and hairstyles
The group also wanted to bring in influences from their own cultures ( Pakistani, Kenyan, Angolian, Chinese, British). We all agreed that we would bring in clothing, fabric or photographs the following week to show items that related to our cultures. These could be things we liked or something very typical or traditional.
Here are some of the fabrics which were bought in.
Megg modelling some traditional kenyan clothing.
Sita showed us some fabric her grandma had given her.
Onaissa showed us some photos on her phone and Shuang added some images to our facebook page here
