Illuminate takeover day ideas

On November 28th 2015 Illuminate are running a "takeover day " at Nottingham Castle which links to the exhibition "A World to Win and is part of our Arts Council funded project of the same name.

We were keen to get planning and marketing for the event  and so have started to brain storm ideas.

After discussing events and protests that the group have been involved in we decided that some of the key points for planning the day were

To come together with a shared idea- What is it?
Be specific about what we are trying to do and why we are there
Maybe use our manifesto or something similar as a starting point
For example: Our ideas for a better world, create activities that link, then think about yours,
A positive message/positive action

We decided that we wanted the day to be full of activities that encouraged the audience to be " free thinkers" we felt that this meant

Don't just believe what you're told, ask questions
Listen to other people's point of view even if you think they are wrong
Be your own person, your own journey
The mind of a philosopher
Pick apart your own views

We wanted visitors to have their views challenged and questioned as well as being able to discuss issues, learn creative ways to share their views and ideas and come away feeling they are able to take positive action and have learnt skills to give them a voice.

Here's the description we have come up with for the day

Illuminate takes over A World to Win

Illuminate invites you to question your thoughts, share your creativity, and find your voice
Take part in debates and workshops, learn new skills and have fun.
The day draws on the themes of the exhibition 'A World to Win' Posters of Protest and Revolution and is hosted by the Illuminate group, NCMG's young volunteer group for 15 -24 year olds.

Here are some of our initial ideas of what might happen on the day

Encourage people to be active participants and involved straight away
Perhaps ask people to choose a badge with a slogan on which says something about what they believe and links to the theme of the day.

Get people thinking

We could show short films in one gallery ( like amnesty international shorts) with cushions on floor?

Stage
Open mic poetry
Political stand up
Protest songs, musicians
Read extracts from books? ML King, Gandhi etc?

Heathcote Williams, Poetry can f*ck off
Demonstrating how the right words in the right place get under the skin of those in power and bring about lasting change.

Sharing ideas/exchanging ideas
Get people talking
Exchange ideas with others
via Postcard, give /exchange with others
Speed debate
Voting tokens
Message in a bottle
Train with messages

Mega phone
Programmed soap box
Draw round each other and fill in with words/images
